Abila
Nebi Habil (Miller) · Suq Le Basi Barada (Barrington)
Abila was known as Abila of Lysanias, after one of the tetrarchs who ruled the surrounding mountain country from a castle here; it lay on the river Chrysorrhoas at Suq Wadi Barada in Syria. Its small realm, Abilene, was carved out of the inheritance of Herod the Great in 4 BC, and Caligula and Claudius later gave it to Agrippa the First and the Second. Tradition holds that Cain killed his brother here, and the site has been called Nebi Habil only since the 16th century. Ruins of a temple and rock tombs remain.
