Abgabes
Arhavi
Abgabes is a copying slip for Archabes: a capital R was taken for a B, and the ch sound was garbled. The name belonged to a cape and a river mouth on the Black Sea coast at Arhavi in Turkey, which Procopius mentions just after Athenae. Italian sea charts of the 13th century still have Archavi. The fortress remains there date only from the 15th century, and a castle with a sculpted Pegasus, reported by a traveller in 1820, could not be found again.
