Serratione

(near Castelnau-le-Lez)

Serratione is how early editions read a name whose middle is now illegible; the true name was Sextantio, the station at Substantion by Castelnau-le-Lez, just outside Montpellier. It was a place to change horses on the post road from Spain to Italy. In the first century it was probably one of the twenty-four minor towns that the Roman naturalist Pliny assigns to Nîmes. Milestones found around it count sixty-one, sixty-two and sixty-three miles from Narbonne. The map's figure onward is twenty, where the other itineraries give fifteen.
