Citari

Kythrea

Citari is Chytroi, at Kythrea in Cyprus, an inland town of great age: Assyrian records of Esarhaddon and Ashurbanipal already name a king of Kitrusi, one of the island's ten kingdoms. Many short dedications in the old Cypriot script honour Aphrodite, and her sacred precinct here, together with the similar name, led some ancient writers to confuse the town with the island of Kythera. A gilded bronze statue was set up here between 351 and 354 for the praetorian prefect Philippus, yet in the 4th century a bishop could call his seat a miserable town.
