Road station
Attas
Dibsi Faraj
Listen to the story
Attas, the Athis of the geographer Ptolemy, lay at Dibsi Faraj on the road that follows the right bank of the Euphrates up from Sura, and the place was also known as Neocaesarea. The map counts twelve Roman miles from Barbalisso, but gives neither a figure nor a line on to Sure, and a station seems to be missing here. The Ravenna list fills this stretch with names such as Sepe and Dertha, though its compiler already struggled to place them, for his own map had the same gaps.
