Barbalisso
Tell Meskene ~ Emar
Barbalisso was a fortress on the right bank of the Euphrates, on the road from Beroea, now Aleppo, to Sura, and the emperor Justinian had it strongly fortified anew, as the historian Procopius tells. In late Roman times a regiment of Dalmatian cavalry lay here. The site is Tell Meskene, the place of ancient Emar. The Ravenna list names the town twice, once in Syria and once, wrongly, in Persia. On the map no line is drawn on to Attas; only the figure twelve, about eighteen kilometres, marks that stretch.
