Vulturno

Castel Volturno (Campania, Italy)

Listen to the story

Vulturno is Volturnum, now Castel Volturno, at the mouth of the river Volturno, fortified by Rome in 212 BC as a base against Hannibal and made a colony a few years later. Sextus Pompeius destroyed it in 38 BC, and Augustus refounded it. When Domitian built his coast road in 95 AD, a bridge carried it over the river here, and remains of that bridge are built into the wall of the castle. The map's twelve Roman miles on both sides are one figure copied twice.
