Zyrnas Maseli

Ksar el Hamar · (45 miles E Thamugadi) (Barrington)

Zyrnas Maseli is one of the map's most obscure names, a station on the road from Vicus Aurelii towards Theveste in Numidia, perhaps at Ksar el Hamar near Khenchela, the Roman Mascula, in Algeria; the hot springs of Aquae lay a few miles off. Even the reading is uncertain: early editions printed Mascli, and on the parchment the m and the e are unclear, only the s is certain. The map sets it fourteen Roman miles from Vicus Aurelii, and draws the next stretch as two, without inking in the stroke that should close it.
