Carnasso

Giresun

Carnasso is a garbled Ceraso, from Cerasus, the old name of Giresun on the Black Sea coast, a colony of Sinope. Arrian says the town was by then called Pharnacia, yet the older name outlived the newer one: medieval Italian sea charts wrote it Chirizonda, and it survives in Giresun. The list compiled in Ravenna even turns Cerasus into an island, perhaps the small island of Aretias just offshore, and its puzzling Parnasum and Eisnoson may be mangled forms of Pharnacia. The map, short of room on this coast, could not set the town in its true place.
