Laconice

Listen to the story

Laconice was the usual Greek name for the land of Sparta, the southern Peloponnese around the valley of the Eurotas, framed by the Taygetos and Parnon mountains. Officially the Spartan state called its territory Lacedaemon, and the Roman writer Pliny wrote Laconica; under Rome it belonged to the province of Achaia. On the map the name stands in black rather than the usual red, and the copyist first left out a letter, producing Laonice. The missing c was later squeezed in lightly after the A, perhaps by the same hand that corrected the misspelt Arcadia just below.
