Isteria is the Tabula's name for Istria, the peninsula at the head of the Adriatic, today shared by Croatia and Slovenia. It takes its name from the Histri, a people who built fortified hilltop settlements here from the eleventh century BC. Rome first moved against them in 221 BC to end their piracy, conquered their kingdom in 178 and 177 BC, and the historian Livy dismissed them as a poor people. Under Augustus the border of Italy was pushed forward to the river Arsia, and Istria joined Venetia as the tenth region of Italy. Its olive oil and wine drew the estates of emperors and senators, among them Agrippa and Maecenas.
