Imwas

Amavante is Emmaus, today's Imwas near Latrun, on the road from Jaffa to Jerusalem where the hill country ends. That strategic position made it for a long time the fortified camp of the 5th Legion. In the early 3rd century it was refounded as Nicopolis, yet the map keeps the older name. It is not the Emmaus of Luke's gospel; remains of a church dedicated to the Maccabees survive here. On the map the faint line from here down to Cofna is probably a copyist's error; the road was meant to run on to Jerusalem.
