Ioppe
Jaffa
Ioppe is Jaffa, a port so old that Egyptian records from the time of Thutmose the Third already name it. Greek legend set the story of Andromeda here, chained to the rocks for a sea monster until Perseus freed her, and the tale of Jonah and the great fish belongs here too. Strabo calls it the harbour of Jerusalem, claiming the city could be seen from it. Before Roman rule pirates used it as a base, so Vespasian razed the town and built a fortress in its place. On the map the copyist drew the bend for the next stretch too early, before the distance figure.
