Iominio Municipio
Tigzirt
Iominio Municipio, the town at Tigzirt on the Algerian coast, probably began as a Phoenician or Punic trading post; the I at the start of its name points to the Punic word for island. It became a municipium under Septimius Severus, yet Punic tradition lived on, and in Roman times Saturn took the place of Baal Hammon. A bishop is named in 411. Its ruins on the slope of Cap Tedellès include baths, temples and a Christian basilica, and a fragment inscribed Iomnio settled the identification. On the map a gap splits the figure forty-two for the road onward, though no stop stands in it.
