Amathus

Limasol

Amathus, a Phoenician city of great age on the south coast of Cyprus, lies in ruins at Old Limassol. With Paphos it was a chief seat of the cult of Aphrodite and Adonis, and it was ruled by kings. When the cities of Cyprus rose against Darius, Herodotus says, this one alone stayed loyal to the Persians. The poet Hipponax praised its wheat and Ovid its metal, and the city had copper mines. The map sets it sixteen Roman miles from Curio and twenty-four, about thirty-five kilometres, from Cito.
