Appollonia

Uluborlu

The finest quinces, says the writer Athenaeus, grew at Appollonia, also called Mordion. The town, at Uluborlu, stood on a naturally fortified mountain terrace above a plain, by a stream that also appears on its coins, and was earlier called Mordiaion. It struck coins from the second century BC to the emperor Gallienus, and the martyr Zosimos came from here under Trajan. In late antiquity the town, or a place beside it, was called Sozopolis, the city of salvation. The map spells the name with a double p, as it mostly does, and lets a river crossing stand in for the station mark.
