Agmonia

Ahat Köy · Ahatköy

Agmonia is Akmonia, at Ahat Köy in Turkey; the G is probably a slip for C, two capitals that are easily confused. An ancient lexicon names a hero, Akmon, as its founder. In Roman times its people belonged to the court district of Apamea, and from the 5th century it was a bishop's seat. A long settlement mound with traces of walls marks the site, the village is full of Roman and early Byzantine stones, and a floor mosaic has been partly destroyed by looters. The thirty-five miles the map counts from Kotiaeion are far too few; the real distance is some sixty-five to seventy.
