Appollonia

Gölyazı, früher Apolyont

Appollonia lay at Gölyazı in Turkey, on a former island in Lake Apolloniatis, now Ulubat Gölü. Because the river Rhyndacus linked the lake with the sea, the town struck coins with an anchor and a ship, as a port would. It was probably founded by King Attalus the Second of Pergamon and perhaps named after his mother, Apollonis. Plutarch tells how, after Lucullus routed the troops of Mithridates by the Rhyndacus, the women of Apollonia came out to seize the baggage and strip the dead. On the map a river runs right through the name and splits it in two.
