Balacris Hoc est templum Asclepy

Beida (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Balacris stood in Cyrenaica, at today's Beida in Libya, and the Tabula leaves no doubt about what made it worth a stop: beneath a small drawing of a house, the copyist wrote in Latin, this is the temple of Asclepius. Asclepius was the Greek god of healing, and the Greek writer Pausanias tells of an Asclepius called the Healer here, brought over from Epidaurus. He adds that, unlike the Epidaurians, the people of Cyrene sacrificed goats to him. The Roman writer Pliny knew the town as the home of a wine, and its name seems to be Macedonian.
