Berizto

Beirut

Listen to the story

Berizto is Beirut, and space on this crowded stretch of the Lebanese coast was so tight that its name is split around the town's symbol, with the first two letters on the left, to keep the lettering from running out over the sea. The name probably goes back to an old word for wells. Under Augustus, his general Agrippa settled veterans of the fifth and eighth legions here, probably in 15 BC, and the town became a Roman colony. From the middle of the third century it was home to a famous school of Roman law, which the emperor Justinian called the nurse of the laws, and the Roman writer Pliny praised its grapes and wine.
