Tripoli

Listen to the story

Tripoli grew, the geographer Strabo says, from a joint colony of three cities, Aradus, Sidon and Tyre; each quarter had its own wall and lay a stade from the next. Hence the Greek name, the triple city. Julius Valerius, who retold the life of Alexander, credits Alexander the Great with founding it from three villages instead. It had a good harbour, busy trade and important shipping, and the city in Lebanon still bears the name. The map counts twenty Roman miles from Botrus and twelve on to Ortosias.
