Botrus

Batrun

Botrus is Botrys, now Batroun on the coast of Lebanon, a Phoenician town said to have been founded by Ithobaal, king of Tyre. It lay at the foot of a mountain that juts into the sea, and the Greek geographer Strabo knew it as a stronghold of the robber tribes of the Lebanon mountains. The town owed its harbour to an earthquake under Justinian, which gave it a small port, and remains of a harbour mole have been recorded. In imperial times it struck its own coins.
