Tripoli

bei Yenicekent, östl. von Buldan

Tripoli lay near Yenicekent, east of Buldan in Turkey, on a rocky site in the valley of the upper Maeander, where the road coming over from the Hermos valley reached the river. Its coins show that it was called Apollonia before it took the name Tripolis, probably under Augustus, and for a while it also bore the name Antoniopolis, after Mark Antony, who travelled through Asia Minor in 41 BC. The town flourished under the emperors, its rich coinage giving pride of place to Leto. Excavations have found baths and a theatre of the 2nd century AD and several early Byzantine churches.
