Temissonio

wahrscheinl. Karahüyük in der Ebene von Acıpayam

Listen to the story

Temissonio is a garbled Themisonion, a town of south-western Phrygia probably named after Themison, a favourite of King Antiochus the Second. The travel writer Pausanias tells its local legend: when the Galatians ravaged the region, Heracles, Apollo and Hermes showed the town's leaders in dreams a cave where they hid with wives and children, and small statues of the three gods stood before it. The town probably lay at Karahüyük in the plain of Acıpayam, where a milestone marked mile one was found. On the map the name is pushed aside to make room for the long figure of thirty-four miles, which the river line cuts in two.
