City
Bibona
Cahors
Listen to the story
Bibona, on the road across Aquitaine, is a copyist's slip: the town was really Divona, the chief place of the Celtic Cadurci, whose tribal name later passed to the city now called Cahors, in France. The geographer Ptolemy and the poet Ausonius both knew it as Divona. It stood where three routes met, with a branch running off to Agen. Roman traces lasted long: a bridge vanished only in 1868 and a theatre in 1851, while a gateway of the Roman baths still stands in the old streets.
