Boas

Neapolis

Listen to the story

Boas marks the Greek town of Boiai, near modern Neapolis on the bay of Vatika in the Peloponnese, where legend says a hare sent by Artemis, goddess of the hunt, led its founder Boios to a myrtle tree. The map gives it a pair of towers joined by a linking piece, like those of Sparta and Athens, yet sets it on the wrong side of the Laconian Gulf. The road ends here, and the figure of twenty-five Roman miles, about thirty-seven kilometres, written after the drawing is a small puzzle. It probably gives the otherwise missing distance from Asopos.
