Bonnae

Bonn

Listen to the story

Bonnae stands on the map in the locative case, meaning 'at Bonna', and marks the legionary fortress on the Rhine from which the city of Bonn grew. The map gives it the same pair of towers as Cologne, although the place never held town rights; modern Bonn developed out of the camp suburb beside the fortress. The historian Tacitus often names it as a Roman stronghold, and Ammianus counts it among seven cities taken by the emperor Julian. A disputed word in the writer Florus, possibly a slip for Bonna, underpinned the city's two-thousandth anniversary in 1989.
