Brigantio

Bregenz

Listen to the story

Brigantio lies beneath Bregenz in Austria, on the north-eastern bay of Lake Constance, where important routes from east to west and north to south met. The name comes from a Celtic word for 'high', and the Greek geographer Strabo calls the town the chief place of the Brigantii. A fort stood here under the emperor Tiberius, and a thriving civil town grew on a plateau nearby, with baths, market halls, shrines and quarters of metalworkers. Late in the third century life shifted to the better protected upper town, and in late Roman times a unit of boatmen was stationed at a war harbour on the lake.
