Bordeaux
Listen to the story
Burdegalo is Bordeaux, the chief town of the Bituriges Vivisci, a Gallic people, on the left bank of the Garonne close to its mouth. Most of its letters have faded on the map, and the full reading rests on the printed edition of 1598. The city was a harbour for Atlantic trade, above all tin from Britain, famous for its wine and oysters, and later the capital of the province of Aquitania Secunda. The poet Ausonius was born here, and a pilgrim's route from Bordeaux set out from its gates all the way to Constantinople.
