Cabillione
Châlon-sur-Saône
Listen to the story
Cabillione, now Chalon-sur-Saône in France, was a town of the Aedui, a Gallic people, on the river the Romans called the Arar, today the Saône. Julius Caesar already mentions it in his account of the Gallic War, and the Greek geographer Strabo knew it as well. Its position on river and highway made it a busy place for trade and traffic, and in late Roman times a river fleet for the Saône was stationed here. The map marks the town with a small house, a drawing that was reworked from a single tower, and both roads leading onward cross the river.
