Canusio
Canosa di Puglia
Listen to the story
Canusio, today Canosa di Puglia, is marked on the Tabula by its town symbol alone. The name itself is missing, in a cramped spot beside a river, and so are the road line and the distance figure that should lead to it. Legend held that the Greek hero Diomedes founded the town and hunted here with his hounds, and the poet Horace called its people bilingual, speaking Greek as well as Latin. After the disaster at Cannae, the survivors of the Roman army took refuge here. Later the town prospered on Apulian wool, and the wealthy Herodes Atticus gave it an aqueduct.
