Burno
Ivoševci near Kistanje (Croatia)
Listen to the story
Burnum stood on the right bank of the river Krka, near Ivoševci close to Kistanje in Croatia, as the centre of a local Liburnian people, the Burnistae. Rome made it a military base during Octavian's wars in Illyricum and later turned it into a legionary fortress, home to the Eleventh Legion until the reign of Vespasian. It watched the roads that climbed over the Dinaric Alps into inland Dalmatia. Under Hadrian the civilian settlement became a municipium, a self-governing town, and excavations have uncovered an amphitheatre, a sanctuary, several arches and a water supply.
