Bituriza

Cavriglia [4] · in der Nähe von Montevarchi [2] · bei Bucine [3]

Listen to the story

Bituriza was a road station on the Via Cassia, the road that ran from Chiusi to Florence through the upper Arno valley. The geographer Ptolemy knew it as Biturgia. Its exact site is disputed: older research looked near Montevarchi or Bucine, while it is now most probably placed at Cavriglia in Tuscany. There, beside the parish church, remains of buildings with mosaic floors have come to light, along with farm installations, grave goods, coins and a marble group from the cult of Mithras. From the station two routes seem to have led on, the Via Cassia by Arezzo and a shorter but rougher road by Sinalunga.
