Arcidava

Vărădia

Arcidava, the Argidava of the Greek geographer Ptolemy, was a Roman camp and small town at Vărădia near Oravița in the Romanian Banat, on the military road that led from Lederata on the Danube to Tibiscum and on to Sarmizegetusa, the road of Trajan's advance into Dacia. Around 100, probably during the Dacian wars, a cohort of a thousand men, first raised among the Vindelici, was moved here from Upper Moesia. Older research placed Arcidava at Vršac instead.
