Arelate
Groß-Pöchlarn
Listen to the story
Arelate on the map is really Arelape, now Pöchlarn, where the Erlauf flows into the Danube; the river still carries the old name, while the copyist turned it into the more familiar Arelate, the ancient name of Arles. In late Roman times a Danube fleet and a unit of Dalmatian cavalry were stationed here, and in the Nibelungenlied the town, as Bechelaren, is the seat of the margrave Rüdiger.
