Arcilapopoli

Ruinen von Karaelbistan ?

Arcilapopoli is a garbled Archelaopolis, the town of Archelaus, the last king of Cappadocia, who ruled from 41 BC to AD 17: installed by Mark Antony, he went over to Augustus at Actium and kept his throne, until Tiberius accused him before the Senate. On the map the town lies halfway between Comana and Melitene, which points to the ruins of Karaelbistan near Elbistan, perhaps the forerunner of the medieval town there, with pottery from the Middle Bronze Age onwards and Roman building remains. Because the map still uses this name, the entry has been dated before the waves of renaming under Claudius and the Flavians.
