Arae Philaenorum Fines Affricae et Cyrenaensium

Arae Philaenorum, the altars of the Philaeni, appears here as a border label: the boundary of Africa and of the Cyreneans. Legend told of two Carthaginian brothers who raced two men from Cyrene to fix the frontier, then let themselves be buried alive on the spot so that the land on their side would stay with Carthage. The altars, at the southernmost point of the Great Syrtis, first marked the eastern edge of Carthage's realm, later the boundary between the Roman provinces of Africa and Cyrenaica. The map names no province of Cyrenaica, and this label is one of two entries that hint at it.
