Pretonio
Marsa Matruh (Barrington)
Pretonio is Paraetonium, now Marsa Matruh on the coast of Egypt, a town once also called Ammonia. It was founded by Alexander the Great, who set out from here for the oasis of Ammon. A strong city with a harbour and a circuit of thirty stadia, it gave refuge to Antony and Cleopatra, later fell into decay and was restored by Justinian. Its stones lived on in an Arab castle built from the remains of Greek and Roman buildings.
