Priapos

Karabiğa · Karabiga

Priapos keeps its Greek ending on the map, while its neighbours Parium and Cranico have Latin ones. The harbour town at Karabiga, on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara, was named after the god Priapus, who was worshipped there, in a countryside famous for its vines. It was founded either from Miletus or from Cyzicus. In 334 BC it surrendered of its own accord to Alexander the Great, and the Roman writer Pliny even placed Alexander's crossing into Asia here, wrongly. By 75 BC it was a Roman customs post, and from the 9th century the settlement lived on as Pegai.
