Cresonesso

Chersónesos, Χερσόνησος,

Cresonesso is Chersonesos, the harbour town of Lyttos on the north coast of Crete east of Knossos. Only the first letters, Creso, are clear today; the rest of the name has faded, and older copies read Cresonesso. The town struck its own coins from the mid 4th century BC, showing the goddess Britomartis, whose sanctuary stood nearby, and in Christian times it became a bishop's seat that outshone Lyttos itself. The figure on to Litium reads fifteen on the parchment and in the 1888 photograph, not sixteen as once assumed.
