Foro Segustauarum

Feurs

Listen to the story

Forum Segusiavorum, the market town of the Segusiavi, a Celtic people whose land straddled the Loire, lies beneath modern Feurs in France. It was a Gallic village until the Roman general Agrippa built the road from Lyon to Saintes between 40 and 37 BC and turned it into a crossroads and the capital of a free community. Excavations found a forum with a temple and council house, and the town's theatre, first built of wood, was rebuilt in stone under the emperor Claudius. The map marks it with a pair of towers. In the Middle Ages the district was called pagus Forensis, which lives on in the name Feurs.
