Ferentinum
Ferentino
Listen to the story
High on a hill above the Via Latina, Ferentinum was an old town of the Hernici, a people of Latium whom the map itself never names. Today it is Ferentino, south-east of Rome in Lazio. The town was strong enough for Rome to hold hostages there, and it stayed loyal during the Hernican revolt of 306 BC, earning the right to keep its own laws. Its massive walls still stand, with gates, towers and an acropolis whose fortifications were rebuilt by the town's censors in the time of Sulla. It became a bishop's seat in the fourth century.
