Faliatis

Veliki Gradac

Listen to the story

Faliatis owes its opening letter to a slip: the map clearly writes an F where other ancient sources, the geographer Ptolemy among them, have a T, calling the place Taliata or Talia. The fort lay on the Danube at Veliki Gradac in Serbia, where late Roman troops included a unit of scouts named after the place, and tiles stamped by the Seventh Legion Claudia have been found. A road branched off here towards Porolissum in Dacia. The map puts it fifteen Roman miles from Ad Scrofulas and eight from Gerulatis.
