Listen to the story
Firmo Viceno is the Roman town of Firmum Picenum, today Fermo in Italy. Where other sources write Picenum, the name of the surrounding region, the map has Viceno, probably a copyist's slip. Rome founded a Latin colony here in 264 BC, on a hill above the river Tenna about eight kilometres from the Adriatic. The next name along the road, Castellum Firmanorum, was its harbour, as the Greek geographer Strabo notes. The town stayed loyal to Rome against Hannibal and later received veterans of Caesar's fourth legion. Stretches of its city wall, a theatre and Roman cisterns survive.
