Epitauro

Palaia Epidauros · Παλαιά Επίδαυρος

Listen to the story

Epitauro preserves an old spelling of Epidaurus, and the Greek geographer Strabo noted that the city was indeed once called Epitauros. The town stood on a rocky hill jutting into a bay of the Saronic Gulf, at Palaia Epidavros in Greece, with a good harbour. Some ten kilometres away lay the famous sanctuary of Asclepius, which the Goths destroyed in AD 395, yet the map shows no temple at all. It also sets the town slightly astray, off the unnamed headland of the Argolid where it belongs, and the letters of the name were squeezed in around a drawing that was clearly made first.
