Narni
Listen to the story
Narnia, today Narni in Umbria, was founded as a Latin colony in 299 BC on the site of the Umbrian town of Nequinum. That old name sounded ill-omened, because popular etymology heard in it nequire, 'to be unable', so the colony was renamed after the river Nar that flows past its steep limestone spur. The town was the birthplace of the emperor Nerva, and one great arch of the Bridge of Augustus still stands over the river. On the Tabula the town's symbol survives but its name is missing, and the road on to Aqua Viva was never drawn, though its figure of seven miles remains.
