Listen to the story
Nasium was, after Toul, the most important town of the Leuci, a Gallic people in the Roman province of Belgica. Its remains lie at Naix-aux-Forges on the Ornain, a tributary of the Marne, in France. It grew up below an older Celtic hillfort at Boviolles, and excavations uncovered an amphitheatre, temples, baths, an aqueduct, houses with rich mosaics, and altars to Epona and Mercury. The town sat on the road from Reims to Toul, yet the map leaves out the road line towards the next station. Later a fortified place, it was taken by the Frankish king Theuderic the Second in AD 612 and struck Merovingian coins.
