Acunum

Stari Slankamen

Acunum is Acumincum, today Stari Slankamen in Serbia, opposite the mouth of the Tisza, a Roman camp on the road from Aquincum to Viminacium that began as a Celtic foundation. Here, as the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus tells, the Romans raised a high mound like a tribunal behind a rampart, while ships carrying lightly armed legionaries watched the river. In late Roman times horsemen and mounted archers were stationed here. The Greek geographer Ptolemy places a legion at Acumincum, probably by confusion with Aquincum.
