Tarso Cilicie

Tarsus (Turkey)

Tarso Cilicie, Tarsus in Cilicia, has a blank space beneath its name where even the road lines are missing, very probably left for a larger picture that was then forgotten. Judging by the size of the gap, it was to be a temple, fitting a city of many shrines and festivals and the home of the apostle Paul, or the hexagonal sign for a residence, since Julian resided here. The map also sets the town too far from the coast, still beside the word Cappadocia, and leaves out the river Cydnus. The Ravenna list, drawing on the same source, still saw it nearer the sea.
