Fl. Marisus o. Fl. Gifil/Gilpit

Marös o. Schyll · Schiul (Miller) · Marosch · Mureş (Barrington)

Marisus is a modern label for a river the map draws without a name, one of four streams running from the Carpathians into the Danube. Read with the roads around it, after Apula and between Brucla and Salinis, it would be the Maris known to the Greek writers Herodotus and Strabo, today's Mureş in Romania. Yet older research was convinced that the four rivers have nothing to do with the roads and were copied from a world map, so this one may rather be the Gifil, today's Jiu, much as the geographer Ptolemy lists four rivers flowing from the Carpathians.
